Father's Day Card

This is the card I made for my Dad! 

It actually started as a scrap card.......made from a scrap of black card stock with a hole from cutting a cog out of it.  It's a little hard to see in my photo.  The opening around the stamped guys was cut with a die from Spellbinders Cogs. 

I embossed the piece with Industrial M-Bossabilities folder.  I was trying to create the look of farm machinery!  I rubbed silver and rust Gilders Paste over the embossed pattern.  The Gilders Paste has a very metallic color.  It really pops the pattern! 
Next I cut 2 gears using dies from Spellbinders Cogs.  The one with the brads was cut with #2 and 4 nested together.  The center #2 is the small gear.  I cut a piece from Celtic Motifs to layer over the bigger gear.  Doesn't it make a great gear?  Again, I've used Gilders Paste to create the metallic look.
In back of the cog opening, I've glued a piece of clear packaging for a window.  I stamped the image, an old stamp from my collection, on Kraft paper and added a touch of blue to their clothes and tan ink around the edges.  Since the image was too small to fill the opening, I backed it with green paper.
The greeting was stamped in black and clear heat embossed on green paper.  I cut that with Spellbinders A2 Matting Basics A, the thin long die. I hand cut a gold mat.  It's mounted with 3D Foam Squares.
The card size is 5 x 7".
This was a fun card to make! I started with the scrap of black card stock and it evolved from there!  I chose the green and gold because my dad has John Deere tractors!

Flowers Feed the Soul Journal

No jewelry in this post but I did use more Spellbinders Media Mixage™ products!

 

This is a project I did for Spellbinders.  You can find it on their website here.  There's even a link to download the instructions.

 

My inspiration was to make a garden journal.  A place for notes about  anything gardening!  Since I made the journal with my Bind-It-All machine, I added envelopes as dividers between the pages. A spot to tuck in a seed packet or info about a new plant.  

 

The aqua flower inside the dark blue flower is a Spellbinders blank from MB6-004 Flowers One.  There's another one peaking out from under the pink flower. The blanks are gold color.  I used ink to color it with clear embossing powder over it.  The other flowers are paper, inked and clear heat embossed.  I used MD2-004 Flowers One matching set of dies to cut
those.
The label was cut with another Media Mixage die, MD2-001 Frames One.  I inked through the die and then stamped the verse.

The butterfly is the larger blank from MB6-008 Butterflies One.  I used the matching die set, MD2-008 Butterflies One to cut the paper for the wings.  The paper is white cardstock colored with pigment inks and clear heat embossed. There's a touch of gold embossing powder sprinkled over top and heated into the clear.  I hand cut a piece of paper to make the "body" of the butterfly and glued it to the blank.

I chose my Flowers Feed the Soul Journal to show today! 

This journal features some of the Media Mixage blanks and matching die templates.  You can find downloadable directions for this book on Spellbinders website here.  I'm not going to repeat all the directions since they are available to download.

 

 



 

The butterfly is a metal blank from SPellbinders Butterflies One blank set.  It has paper pieces glued to the wings.  I  cut the paper with the Sellbinders die template:   Spellbinders™ Butterflies One which matches the blank set.  To add color,  I've applied pigment ink and heat embossed it with clear.  I sprinkled a touch of gold embossing powder over top and heated it.

 

 

The little paper flowers were cut with Spellbinders™ Flowers One die template set.  Two of the flowers are metal blanks: one is peaking out from under the pink flower and the other is the center aqua flower on the big blue flower.  It's colored with ink and heat embossed with clear.  These are part of the set Spellbinders™ Flowers One blanks set. 

 

I've also used a Media Mixage die template set for the verse label - Spellbinders Frames One.  I inked through the die to add the shading around the edges.  The verse is from Flourishes stamp set "From the Garden".

 

 The background rectangle and frame were cut with Spellbinders™ S5-171 A2 Round Corner Basics A.  I used 2 dies nested together to cut the frame.  The frame has been embossed with

M-Bossabilities So Trendy.   I stamped a branch from Penny Black's "A Wish for Peace" clear set with black ink, and then added nail polish to the dots on the branches.   I stamped the same branch on the book cover.

 

The journal itself has chipboard covers covered with light Kraft packing paper and designer paper on the inside. I added My Mind's Eye paper to the outside of the covers.  Inside, there are pages for notes and sketches as well as envleopes that divide the paper sections and add a place to tuck seeds and garden notes.

Sneak Peek: Spellbinders Summer Spectacular!

Welcome to Day 3 of Sneak Peek: Spellbinders™ Summer Spectacular!!!!

 Isn’t this exciting?!!  I’m always amazed by all the incredible new Spellbinders products!  This release is no exception…….Awesome new stuff!!!

Today, I have the honor of revealing one of the new background die templates called Botanical Swirls and a very practical set of tags, Back to Basics Tags!   Spellbinders new background die templates are amazing!!!  The tag set is all the basics! A must have set!  I especially like the tiny tags!

For my project, I embellished a photo frame with Botanical Swirls and one of the tags from Back to Basics Tags!

Isn’t this pattern incredible?  Botanical Swirls die template is designed to be cut multiple times so the pattern continues.  It’s pretty amazing!!!  I chose to piece the pattern under the tags.  The upper portion and lower portion are each all one piece.

Let’s get to the details:

I started with a frame that’s 8 ¼ x 10 ¼" with an opening for a 4 x 6" photo.  I found this frame at a dollar store.  Any flat frame will work.

First, I painted the frame edges black with acrylic paint.

Next, I applied SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES by 3L™ Adhesive Sheet to the back of a piece of Worldwin® Gold Twist paper the size of the frame.  I traced the frame and opening on the back of the paper for the size.  I cut the edges to fit the frame and rough cut the photo opening. 

I brushed on Tattered Angels Saffron Glimmer Glaze over the gold paper.  To make the color a bit darker, I rubbed on Tattered Angels Pinecone Glimmer Mist with a sponge and dabbed off any excess with a paper towel.   I’m always too impatient to let it air dry!  I dried it with my heat gun. 

You can see a piece of the original color Twist paper showing through the opening.

I removed the adhesive backing and applied the paper to the frame.  Then I cut the photo opening with a craft knife.  I used a permanent black marker to color the cut paper edges.

The next step is to cut the Spellbinders™ Botanical Swirls from black cardstock.  I applied SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES by 3L™ Adhesive Sheet to the back of 2 – 8 ½ x 6 ¼" pieces of black cardstock.   

The cut pattern from Botanical Swirls is 4 x 6".  Since my frame is 8 ¼" wide, I needed two and part of a third repeat of the pattern. With the paper cut the same width as the length of the die template, it was easy to align the Botanical Swirls template with the edges of the paper to keep the pattern straight.  I’ve used removable tape to hold the die template in place while cutting. Photo 1 in the collage below.

Because there is so much detail to cut with Botanical Swirls, multiple passes through the Grand Calibur® machine are usually necessary.   A shim of cardstock is usually necessary in the center of the die template for the 2^nd and 3^rd passes.  Photo 2 above.

After each tag was adhered over the seam, I trimmed the end on the photo opening side with a craft knife.

Here’s the completed frame ready for a photo.........

To get the black edge around my photo, I cut the photo 3 ¼ x 5 ¼" and mounted it on 4 x 6" black cardstock. That leaves a 1/8" black reveal around the photo. Not necessary, but I thought it set off the photo better.

The Botanical Swirls die template also makes a great embossed pattern!        

For this card, I’ve simply embossed the Botanical Swirls pattern to use as a background.  Simple!  And it adds an interesting pattern!   
I used an oval tag with a verse.  I used the negative opening from a long tag to reveal the red dot paper.

By lapping the template edge ¼" over the edge mark (impression left by edge of template after cutting) from the previous cut, the pattern matches perfectly!  Photo 3 above.I’ve used blue pencil marks on the paper to show the lap.  I added some arrows to help you see where the edge of the Botanical Swirls needs to be in order for the pattern to cut properly.  The tiny line indicates the impression from the die template after the first cut.

To get enough of the pattern for my frame, there was just a little at the edge for the final cut.  Photo 4 above. 

When I cut the second piece for the top of the frame, I started the pattern in the center of the 6 ¼ x 8 ½" paper.  Then I repeated the cut on each side of the first cut.  That way the pattern at the top of the frame isn’t an exact duplicate of the lower pattern.

Here, you can see the Botanical Swirls pattern repeated twice plus part of a third pattern cut out of the black cardstock.  You can see the slight impression line from the edge of the die template where the pattern repeats.   A few of the pieces remained in the template when I removed it.  I removed all the excess pieces and used a scissors and a craft knife to cut along the edges of the top and bottom.  Botanical Swirls die template cuts the pattern but not the edges of the pieces along sides.  Those need to be cut with a scissors or craft knife.



This photo shows the two pieces of cardstock cut with Spellbinders™ Botanical Swirls; all pieces removed and ready to adhere to the frame.  The adhesive backing is the white showing through the pattern.  Some of it didn’t cut when I cut the pattern.  It’s much easier to remove that way!

I used the complete pattern across the lower portion of the frame.  After it was adhered, I trimmed the excess along the frame edges and photo opening.  I added the other piece at the top of the frame and trimmed the excess also.

This photo shows the Botanical Swirls on the frame with edges trimmed.  You can see where the two pieces meet.  

I used two tags to cover the seam.  I cut/embossed 2 from black cardstock and 2 from gold Twist paper that I had colored the same as the frame.  I marked, made holes and inserted micro brads in the gold piece.  I placed one brad in one end of each tag (the other end will be cut off).  I applied ½" Scor-Tape® to the back of the black tag.  Then I placed the gold piece in place. 

Fabulous Birthday Card

This is a birthday card I created for Spellbinders.....it seems I never get anything created just for my blog!!! Lots of creating but it can't be shown just yet!

My Blue Green Goddess

No more Splendid Circles today!!!  Hope you enjoyed the different ways to use them!

I have a totally different project to share today!!!!  I've been waiting to share this project!

I created this goddess for CHA using Julianna Hudgins' Jewel Goddess die template by Spellbinders. This was a work of joy!  Totally fun for me to work with fabric and Spellbinders die templates!!!

I cut this goddess on the diagonal from natural canvas. Cutting it on the diagonal helps the shape be more curvy!  If it was cut on the straight grain, it would be more flat even when stuffed.
I coated the canvas with white Gesso.  That stiffened the fabric and made a good base for my color.  It also prevents the edges from fraying.

The color is many layers of Cosmic Shimmer watercolors (Lavender Shine, Holly Leaf) painted on plus Bronze Blush Shimmer Mist. The swirls were created with Cosmic Shimmer drawing ink. I sprayed it all with a clear sealer when I was happy with color.  Because all the colors are water based, any moisture could make them run if they weren't sealed! 
Love this color combination!  Believe me I had no intention of addinng the green netting when I started.  That is not a favorite color of mine.  It just turned out that I had that color netting!  It worked!

I added the ribbon loops and netting to the front and back before I put the goddess together. I gathered the netting and sewed it on top of the goddess.  The ribbon is one continuous piece that I looped and sewed in place over the netting.  Oh, I colored the silk ribbon (from Creative Impressions), too!!! It matches that way!

I added the gold trim after the goddess was completely together. All pieces were cut from Spellbinders Precious Metals Premium Craft Foil.  The two anchor pieces at the top edges of the skirt are the corner piece in Persian Accents.  I trimmed off one of the elements on each edge.  Those little pieces are what's along the ribbon. (I cut many more, of course!)  I slid each one under the netting edge, glued in place with Beacon Quick Grip.  The back does not have them!

For the top, I twisted 2 pieces of 24 gauge gold Artistic Wire together.  I shaped it with a loop at the top and curved it to match the goddess top.  The ends (hidden inside) have a loop shape to keep them from pulling out.  After the goddess was completely together, I tied a strip of netting and a piece of ribbon around the loop.  The little gem hanging from the ribbon was cut from gold craft foil, too.  It's a shape from Jewel Goddess.  I added a gold gem to it!  Perfect for a necklace!!!

My next step was to sew her together. I marked the wire placement and stitched just the very top edge together. Then I put the wire in place, adding some Quick Grip glue to the ends to keep them in place. I stitched below the wire to the top of the skirt on each side.  I did not stitch over the wire.  If you look closely you can see a tiny gap in the stitching.

I added all the gems once the assembly was done.  Most are Imaginisce Heat Set Crystals applied with the I-Rock tool.  I filled in with a few other crystals from my stash.  I colored a few of the clear ones with blue and green Copic markers. 

I even made the stand!  Yes, a little obsessed!!!!  It certainly would have been easier to use a wood base but I couldn't find one in any store near me.  This base is made of several layers of foam core cut into circles and glued together.  I filled the edges with light weight spackle.  I painted it with Gesso and colored it Cosmic Shimmer watercolors. It's sprayed with a clear sealer, too.  The post is 2 strips of a twisted wood trim that I had in my stash.  I discovered if I glued it together back to back it created a nice spiral dowel!  I wrapped more of the gold wire from end to end fitting it into the grooves. 

The goddess is stuffed with fiberfill.  She basically just sets on the post.  I added Beacon Fabri-Tac to the post to keep her from coming apart easily.

I hope enjoyed this goddess project!  I sure enjoyed making it!  May it inspire you to try cutting fabric or felt with you Spellbinders!!!!
